As the church building is closed for the foreseeable future, in an effort to control the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19, funerals will not take place inside church buildings but only at crematoria and gravesides with only close family present. Please do, however, contact the Parish Office for further information.

The death of a loved one can be devastating and we will do all we can to support you at this difficult time.

The Parish Church of St Mary is the spiritual ‘home’ of everyone who lives within the parish of Attenborough and we at the church will do what we can to help you with the funeral.

If you have suffered a bereavement and would like one of the clergy or staff team at St Mary’s to conduct the funeral service, either in church or at a crematorium, the first point of contact should be a Funeral Director. They will then contact the Parish Office to arrange the availability of the church. The Vicar, or another member of the staff team, will then be in touch with you to arrange a meeting to discuss the service.

The 2020 fees for a funeral service at St Mary’s are £343 (additional fee for choir and/or bellringers on request).

The 2020 Church fees for a funeral service at the crematorium are £215.

Garden of Remembrance

The Garden of Remembrance is an area of the churchyard reserved for the burial of ashes of those who lived in the parish at the time of death; those who died in the parish; and those with strong connections with St Mary’s immediately prior to death. Space, as well as Diocesan rules, will only permit burial of the ashes directly into the ground and we regret that caskets etc. cannot be buried.

The legally-approved plaque is a plain slate tablet, 12” x 6” approx., set at ground level and bearing the full name of the deceased, date of death and age in years.  The approved plaques are only permitted if the deceased’s ashes are buried in the Garden of Remembrance.

The Parochial Church Council arranges for the plaque to be made and this will be put in hand once the necessary completed form and remittance have been received. The total cost for 2020 is £379 and this includes all fees in connection with the burial, the cost of the plaque and the stonemason’s work, and the cost of an entry in the Book of Remembrance. The constituent parts of this cost are:

Burial of ashes – £165

Plaque – £199

Entry in Book of Remembrance – £15.00

Plaques will normally be in position three to six weeks after the request is received.

The Book of Remembrance is kept inside the church with the current month on display.  The Book is sent away for updating twice per year. If you are visiting the church and wish to view a particular page in the book, please contact the Parish Office in advance.

Annual Bereavement Service

A Bereavement Service is held annually during November to support those families who have been bereaved and help them experience God’s strength and comfort in the months and years to come. It will include a time of thanksgiving for the lives of those who have died, and there will be an opportunity to light a candle in memory of your loved one.

As with all our services, family and friends are very welcome at this service.

Stars in the Darkness

Christmas can be a difficult time when those we love are no longer with us, especially through bereavement and when our bereavement is recent. Yet Christmas reminds us that God’s love was shown to us through the birth of Jesus and marked by a star.

Once the Christmas tree is in place, anyone who wishes to remember a loved one is invited to come into church and write the person’s name on a star, which we will provide, and place it on the Christmas tree.

Let that star remind you of God’s eternal light, the light of life, and the new life he gives to those we love.
